Gs of Wifi Technology

Generations of Wireless Technology

When we purchase a mobile phone, we come across many terms like 4G, 5G etc.,.What are all these about?. Let us have a look on these terms. The G stands for generation. There are various generations of wireless technology named as 0G, 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G used in mobile phones as discussed below.

0G technology

0G is the name of the technology when telephone was invented and introduced by Alexander Graham Bell  in 1940 and it existed till 1980. During this period mobile phone was not invented. Only landline phones connected by cables were used. In this technology only analog  voice signals were used  for communication.

1G technology

This technology was introduced in the early 1980s  and it was in usage till 1990.This is the period when mobile phones were introduced. This was exclusively designed for voice communication like the 1G technology. In this technology also only analog signals were used.  It was not possible to send messages in the form of text, image and video. It required an antenna which was used to communicate signals. The speed of the signal transmission was  up to 2.4 kilobits per second only. The quality of the voice signal was poor and also the batteries used in mobile phones had limited life. The size of the mobile phones used was also big and not handy. Security measures were not implemented for the transmitted signals .

2G technology

The next generation was 2G which used digital signal transmission  for the first time. It was launched in 1991 and it was used till 2003. It imbibed  GSM technology which used digital signals. In this generation the mobile phones did not  have antenna unlike 1G. The communication data speed was up to 64 kilobits per second. The transmission of text and  multimedia messages were possible . The quality of the message was better than that was in 1G. Later it became advanced by adding the GPRS technology which  enabled the web browsing, the email services, the uploads and the downloads of data fast.

 3G technology

This technology existed during the period 2003-2009. It has many advantages when compared to 2G. The speed of the data transmission  is from 144 kilo bits per second to 2 megabits per second . It supported high-speed web browsing. Running web applications was also possible.  Video conferencing,  multimedia message transmission via email were started when 3G was used. The added advantages to this 3G technology is fast and easy transfer of audio and video files and it also supported 3d gaming. It also had some drawbacks. The cost incurred for the infrastructure setup, training persons to install towers and  licensing  was high.

4G technology

Fourth generation technology  is keeping up the trend of a new mobile generation. It was introduced in 2011 and it lasted till 2020. It had its own characteristics. The speed is increased from hundred megabits per second to one gigabit per second. Everyone nowadays is using the 4G. It makes people  use mobile web access easily. It implements high-definition mobile TV, cloud computing facility and IP telephony. In simple words, we call the fourth generation technology as a MAGIC where M stands for mobile multimedia, A stands for anytime anywhere, G stands for  global mobility support, I stands for integrated wireless solution and  C stands for customized personal services. The speed of data transmission is ultra-broadband (gigabit speed). The Peak download   and the Peak upload are 1000 Mbit/s and 500 Mbit/s respectively. It has its own disadvantages. 4G introduces a noteworthy inconvenience for people  who travel internationally or like to switch carriers. To implement voice calls,  the subscriber handset must not only have a matching frequency band but also the matching  settings established for the local carrier and/or country.

5G technology

This technology is  a new, faster network that has the potential to transform the internet. It is a software defined network which means that while it won’t replace cables entirely it could replace the need for them by largely operating on the cloud instead. This means it will have a 100x better capacity than 4G which will dramatically improve internet speeds. The fifth generation was started from late 2010. It is a complete wireless communication with almost no limitations . It is highly compatible to  wwww ie.,wireless world wide web which  has its own benefits as follows. It has got  high speed and high capacity providing large broadcasting of data in gigabits per second. It also supports  multimedia newspapers, TV programs with HD quality, faster data transmission,  large phone memory, clarity in audio or video. So all the high-end features will be provided in the fifth generation technology. It's a complete wireless communication with almost no limitations. It supports an interactive multimedia streaming. This technology is more effective and more attractive. It is going to give tough competition to computers and Laptops. Though it is available in the market at present  with more reality than the previous mobiles it is not availed by people as its cost is not affordable for every one.

In this article various wireless technologies have been discussed. It is a simple self explanatory article for providing knowledge on 6 generations of wireless technology for every one who need not be a tech savvy.
